I’ve been hearing a lot about GLP-1 drugs lately—and I get it. They seem like a promising option for weight loss, especially for people who need extra help getting started.

But I’ll always be an advocate for lifestyle changes first.

When it comes to long-term health, nothing beats a solid foundation of movement, nutrition, and good habits.

And now, recent research suggests that you don’t need long, grueling workouts to get results. In fact, short bursts of physical activity might be just what you need to maximize your weight loss efforts.

Why Short Bursts Are So Effective

A new study from the University of Milan reveals that quick bursts of activity—like walking in short intervals or climbing stairs—can burn 20 percent to 60 percent more energy than sustained exercise of the same distance.

In other words, those quick trips up and down the stairs may be more beneficial for your metabolism than you think.

For this study, researchers recruited ten healthy young adults who were asked to perform brief stints of treadmill walking or stair climbing.

These bursts lasted anywhere from 10 seconds to 4 minutes, and the researchers measured each participant’s oxygen uptake to determine the energy expenditure.

What they found was surprising: the shorter bursts consumed significantly more energy than steady, longer bouts of exercise.

When you engage in short bursts of activity, your body ramps up energy use to adjust to the sudden demand. It’s like kickstarting an engine that goes into high gear faster than if you were to coast along at a steady pace.

This means you can burn more calories, increase your metabolic rate, and even tap into fat reserves more effectively in these short intervals. And the best part? You don’t need to set aside hours of your day to do it.

HIIT vs. Traditional Workouts

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) has been popular for a reason—it’s designed around this very concept of short, intense bursts followed by brief rest periods.

But this study suggests that you don’t necessarily need a structured HIIT workout to reap the rewards. Something as simple as walking briskly for a minute or climbing a few flights of stairs can achieve similar results.

However, experts are cautious about applying this to everyone, as the study was conducted on a small group of young, healthy individuals. There’s still more to learn about how short bursts of exercise affect older adults or those with preexisting health conditions.

But based on these findings, it seems likely that even seniors can benefit from breaking up their daily activity into shorter, more frequent sessions.

Simple Ways to Get Moving

If you’re not one for long, drawn-out exercise sessions, this might be great news. Here are a few ways you can incorporate short bursts of activity into your daily routine:

  • Take the stairs – Skip the elevator and opt for the stairs when you can. Even a few flights can rev up your metabolism and provide cardiovascular benefits.
  • Walk for a minute – Whether you’re at home or out running errands, add short, brisk walks. Aim for 30-second bursts where you speed up your pace, then slow down for a brief recovery.
  • Stretch and move during TV breaks – Use commercial breaks or pauses in your day to stretch, walk around, or do a few bodyweight exercises like squats or leg lifts.

The Long-Term Benefits of Short Workouts

Here’s what I like most about this approach: it’s sustainable. Quick, simple exercises are easy to fit into your day, making it more likely that you’ll stick with them over time.

Unlike crash diets or unsustainable routines, these small efforts build up over time, helping you shed extra pounds while also supporting better overall health.

Remember, while GLP-1 drugs and other medical options might offer support for certain individuals, I always prefer lifestyle changes as the first line of defense. Physical activity, no matter how brief, should be a part of your daily life.
